VW swb Transporter Van...Turbo Problem

Hi all,

The vehicle is a t30(?), 2.5 turbo diesel, with a six speed box and has done 63000 miles.

I have driven the above vehicle from new, and it was purchased 11 months ago.

The vehicle is on it's third turbo charger. The first one failed at about 20,000 and the second one failed at 58,000.

They were replaced free of charge, under the VW warranty.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem with this type and specification of vehicle?
I have heard 'on the grapevine' that it is. Can anyone confirm?

Three turbos in less than a year/63k miles? Something seriously wrong, maybe a partial blocked oil or water pipe.

If I was in your position I’d want the failed turbo examined by an expert to identify the cause of failure and get VAG to repair it properly. I’d also be pushing for an extension to the warranty at least for the items replaced thus far.

I'd also want to know what parts of the turbo, if any, found their way into the cylinders.

the same thing happened on my friends van who is a self employed shop fitter, after the 3rd time he got rid for a second hand van as this new one was loosing him work

erm.............no

altho after a run on the motorway I have plenty of town driving before stopping

So it's quite possible you cooked them then. You're supposed to leave them idling for 30 seconds after a journey in order to give the turbo time to cool with oil circulating through it. If you don't, it cooks the bearings.

Well on my wagon it states to for every journey. In my Mondeo handbook it states every journey where the turbo has been used so from experience, it's any journey where I exceed 2000-2500RPM.

Cheers, however here s the rub,

I cover between 75k and 85k every year. Half is motorway...half is town.

This is my second vehicle, and its just about identical to the first in nearly every way, including air conditioning.

We owned the first transporter for two and a bit years, covered about 200k miles and never had a replacement turbo.

As you can see from my postings on this thread, our new van is on its third turbo.

The major difference in engine setup between the first van and the second van is that the second one has a dpf fitted. The first van didnt have this item.
