Your advice on my problem would be very much appreciated.
I have just brought a car for £1000. It was advertised as a 2001 model with a cd car radio. At the same time I purchased a 3 month warranty that covered 50% of the parts and labour costs of certain faults.
The car was delivered to me but I didn't get to drive it because we were going away for a few days. On my return I drove the car for a couple of days but the radio wouldn't work and the bloke I brought it from said I must have been pressing the wrong button! On the third day it lost all power. I had to pull over and keep revving it for about 10 minutes and then I was able to drive home. I took the car immediately to a garage but didn't want them to spend too much time on the car as I had arranged for the guy who I had brought the car off to collect it and fix it under the warranty. Basically the car has an erratic engine, needed 2 new front shock absorbers, front brake pads, replacement exhaust maniford heat sheald, new front c.v. bootes, the exhaust flexi was loose.
The guy who I brought it off eventually collected the car from the garage and said that I would have to pay £150 towards the repair bills. I then received a text message from him basically saying that there was nothing wrong with the engine but that he had fixed the other problems. I asked if he had fixed the radio and he said that it wasn't worth fixing but that he would find me a second-hand one for another £30. I told him that the advert said that the car had a cd radio so the car should have one that actually worked. He agreed to bring the car back to me that night and I was to pay him £150 and he would come back later in the week to install a radio. I told him that he might as well keep the car until he fixes a radio but he then said that he needed the car off the premises because he wasn't insured to keep a sold car on his premises and that the mechanic needed paying.
When I told him that I wasn't happy with this then he said that I have to go and pick the car up myself and pay him the £150. I asked if he could agree to a deduction so that I could get a radio installed and he has refused and says that I fixed far more than was covered by the warranty so we are now in a stale mate situation.
The car was advertised as being 2001 reg but the registration document says 1999. As mentioned the ad also says that it has a cd radio with a steering wheel with stereo controls. It also says that the car has new brakes and exhaust. Basically with the list of problems that I have then it is like a totally different car was advertised compared to what I've got - well actually I haven't got anything at the moment because the guy has the car and I don't know what to do now.
Do I have to take the car back and pay the £150 or do you think I should ask for my money back - what do you think is reasonable?
Many thanks for reading this.
