Hi,

I want to have a go at highlights at home! Does anyone know if it is possible to use shop bought colour kits over salon highlights?

I am trying to save money and thought I might get OH to do it for me with a cap???!

Would be grateful for any advice

Thank You

I don't know if it's recommended but I've done it before and it has been fine.

A couple of points. Do you already have any colour/bleach on your hair? If so go to a salon. If not yes it is easy to do with a cap. t is also easy to to with baliage that means just painting it on where you want the colour. If you do use a cap you hair should not be newly washed and when you have rinsed of the colour and shampoo put the conditioner on while you are still wearing the cap and remove the cap with the conditioner still on. It will come off very easily if you do that. Also do not wash you hair again for at least 3 or 4 days because the cuticle will still be open and you will cause the colour to fade.
Make sure you use a shampoo for coloured hair in future.

Why can't you do it if you already have coloured hair Mrspbradley936? I am thinking about this too. I've had highlighted haid for years and years and I don't want to spend on the hairdresser ATM. I was thinking that I would try and get my DH to help too....I would be prepared to find out what my natural hair colour looks like after all these years (not seen it since mid teens) but he is very definite that I should stay a stripey blonde....

My highlights are usually done with hi lift tint in three colours...I thought thats what I would try at home too....at least one of the colours might be a decent match!

Also, I have quite long hair....I was wondering if I should try and fiddle with foils? I don't mind discomfort through the cap though....

It is not that it cannot be done, it can but you have to know what you are doing!

If you are putting anything on previously untreated hair there is not much that can go wrong apart from if you want to lift black/very dark hair to blonde because it will stop at orange even if you do know what you are doing.

When you apply anything to previously treated hair you run the risk of damaging the hair (over processing or melting if something like Grecian 2000 has been used). There is more chance of that happening if you use high lift tints or bleach because they are harsher.

Ideally you will only colour regrowth with bleach or high lift tint but you can take a contrast (lowlight) all the way down the hair because you are adding colour not taking it out so you will only be using 20 volume developer not 40 volume or bleach. If you pay attention you will notice that a hairdresser will leave out the ends of the hair when lightening regrowth.

Hi,

I usually have highlights but the last three times it has not worked at my hairdessers. My hair has only gone a slightly shade lighter.

The hairdresser says its because I am taking medicine (tramadol for a chronic back injury). Do you think this is correct or could she be just using poor quality stuff.

I go quietly mad when I have to spend all that time and money and it doesnt take. My hair is now showing lots of grey and I want to be blonde again.
Any advice please

If you are grey you will need a base colour of about level 8 which will have the effect of possibly making your hair darker BUT you need a contrast for the blonde to show up against. Have a good look at your regrowth at the front and at the back the chances are that you will have contrast at the back but not in the front. That is because most of us go grey at the front years before the back.

Here is a site that I can recommend:
http://www.killerstrands.blogspot.com/
They also run a google group and you have to answer a couple of questions to be able to join (all of which you will be able to answer if you search the blog).

I will start you off with levels. Hair is giver a number from 1 to 10 (sometimes 12) with 1 being black and 10/12 being almost white. Then hair is given a tone ash, beige, gold, copper, red being the most common.

If you use a cap you cannot do 2 or 3 colours at the same time but you can very easily with foils.

Hi,

Thank You for your reply. Sorry I haven't been on for a couple of days.

My hair is already coloured. For the last 12 months it has been done in foils with 3 colours previous to that it was done through a cap with bleach, (the strongest one that many hair dressers don't use, so i believe) I used to spend a fortune on conditioners (well not really as they came from tesco's with the coupons!)to make sure i kept my hair but i liked it very blonde. The hairdresser i go to now does it nice and i don't have a problem except for the price. I am trying to save money!

Carn't decide what to do now, but thank you for taking the time to post.

Hi,
I have really damaged hair, due to the prolonged use of chemicals.
I've tried many products but still no improvement.
I've lost so much hair. Can anyone give me an advise on what products are good to repair damaged hair. I would really appreciate that. At the moment its fine, thin and short. I would really like it to get thick with volume and length just like it use to be. Please help.
