View Full Version : Driving automatics ?
Usually drive manuals...whats the correct and common practice if waiting at lights/a period of time? leave it in drive or snick it into neutral and and would either situation be more detrimental than the other?

Put in in Park mode.

I usually just sit with my foot on the brake unless it has a hold mode where it will automatically balance the car on the clutch until you hit the go pedal

Drive, neutral or park, doesn't really matter which, with handbrake applied.

Put in in Park mode.
The problem with that is it is the furthest setting away from Drive and in my view too much hassle especially for short change lights for longer waits it might be an option.
If flat I tend to nudge the lever forward into Neutral if on a hill I tend to leave it Drive.
I think the experts will say that Park or Neutral is the correct procedure to minimise wear.
The only issue you might have is if the brake lights are constantly on which can/will annoy those behind you.

There is no problem for short periods and it does no wear anything out.
The auto tranmission fluid in the torque converter would overheat if it was left in drive with the brake on for long periods.

I drive an automatic and if stopping at lights other than for a very brief period, I put the handbrake on and knock it into neutral.
I don't put it into park, as to return the gearstick to 'drive' it has to 'pass through' the reverse position which briefly lights up the reversing lights on my car and no doubt gets the driver behind me slightly apprehensive!!

I drive an automatic. I would recommend leaving it in neutral with handbrake on, as you would a manual car. Putting it into park involves going through all the gears including reverse, which scares the person behind you when they see your reverse lights come on!
I am very lazy and sit in drive with the brakes on. Please note the brakes on autos wear out very quickly. I had a caliper seize up yesterday, stopped as soon as I felt something wrong but too late - lunched the disc, looking at a huge bill.

I don't use Park unless I stop the engine.
Best and quickest method is to push it forward in Neutral whether still on the brakes or using the handbrake. When you're in Neutral drive load is taken off the transmission and also saves fuel. When it's time to go again you can move from N to D very quickly and not hold up traffic behind you.

I've been driving automatics for over 20 years, I've never put the car into neutral at anytime, I put my foot on the brake, nothing more. The only time I touch the gearstick is to put it in Reverse, or into Park when I am done driving.
All this into Neutral and using the handbrake malarky is something drivers of manuals do to keep their hands busy. Automatic drivers just use the brake. :)

Each to their own. In slow moving traffic I use the automatic as intended. When I come to a level crossing or roadworks where there is likely to be a delay in excess of a minute I choose to exercise mechanical sympathy and save fuel.

Totally agree, what is the point of driving an automatic if you are going to play at driving a manual.
Jeez, next people will say they use the hand brake to do a hill start!

You leave your foot on the brake, unless it is night and other road users are queuing behind you - in which case you take your foot from the brake, and apply the parking brake.
There is no reason to take it out of drive - the gearbox or fluid will not overheat. There is no significant degree of wear.
Constantly moving from D to N will be the cause of more wear than leaving it in D.

The last auto I drove was a pasat that didn't have a hand brake it had the button on the dash and it was called a parking brake and to release it the car had to be in park and have my foot on the brake. what a ball ache that was. I think the Merc I drove before that was similar but the parking brake was applied with the foot.
As I was used to doing something with my left hand while driving I used to make use of the DSG gear box and worked it like a manual when I got bored.
As for going on about being lazy not taking their foot off the brake when stopped jees they drive an automatic how much lazier can you get? how do you expect them to do anything when they are just needing to move forward.

I have to say, I think a large proportion of manual car drivers sit with their foot on the brake too. Unless 75% of the cars I follow in traffic queues are automatics as well.
It doesn't bother me so much during the day but I guess it can be a bit dazzling at night. I am guilty of it too though, unless I get to the traffic lights just as they have turned red and I know it will be a longer wait.
AFAIK (but I am no expert), moving the gearstick or staying in D will not wear out the gearbox. It's driving at high speeds for long periods and/or towing that wears out autoboxes. I wouldn't recommend sitting in D with the handbrake on though as it's a surefire way to f**k up your handbrake. :rotfl:
With automatics I worry more about the wear on the brakes than the box. I do check my autobox fluid regularly though. :)
Still not bothered...... wear sunglasses :D
Hmmm... that's a bit inconsiderate of you. :(
Personally I bung it Neutral and lob the handbrake on, it's less effort than having to keep my foot on the brake all the time (I'm lazy too).

Gearchanges are the common cause of wear on automatic gearboxes. Driving at high speeds will not wear them out. Towing a caravan may require more regular ATF changes, but will not wear the gearbox.
Sitting in D with the parking brake on will not 'f**k up your handbrake', in just the same way that parking a car on a hill will also not damage it. In an automatic gearbox there is no physical connection between the engine and the drivetrain, beyond fluid.

Gearchanges are the primary cause of failure of the gearbox. The component that gives up the ghost first is the valve body followed by hydraulic failure normally caused by casing fracture.
Although the fluid is transmission medium being mechanically symapthetic in selecting neutral for long periods of idle is better - a gear selector mechanism is cheaper than a valve body or a new autobox.

I am enlightened regarding gear changes. :)
Driving at high speeds for very long periods (ie burning it at 100mph down the motorway, which we shouldn't be doing anyway :D ) and towing heavy loads can generate more heat in the transmission. The fluid is not sufficiently cooled and is less effective, stands to reason that this increases wear. In the same way, a stop-start journey in a traffic jam or something would have the same effect (especially in combination with repeated gear changes from D to N ;) ). If this is not true then it appears I have been badly misinformed by a friend who refurbishes autoboxes and owns 12 automatic cars.

Ok you're right, I was being a tad overdramatic. :o I felt the need to liven up my day somehow! :rotfl: I wouldn't recommend it with a less-than-perfect handbrake though (like mine) as it will allow the vehicle to creep. :D Don't worry, the handbrake has been fixed now.

I'm not sure where the evidence is that shows you need more skill to drive an automatic? if that was the case they would allow those who pass their test in an auto to drive a proper car without the need to pass a test in a manual car. I enjoy driveing autos and manuals autos becasue you can just put your foot down and go and manual becasue you can drive the car how you want to drive it, If I want to drop down a gear I can and it is instant in an auto you have to put your foot down then wait for it to realise and drop the gear down.

Are you for real? Are you insinuating that my automatic is not a 'proper car' - it looks like a proper one to me, not a plastic replica. They are better and more superior to drive, you have more control. All this fiddling around changing gears is just a boys toys gimmick.

Automatic gearboxes pump fluid to a separate radiator, or intercooler, to keep the fluid at the correct temperature. Provided this is the case, driving at high speed or sitting in traffic will do no damage whatsoever.

I have been driving for six years and I have driven an automatic for three of those years. It's great in slow-moving traffic but other than that I don't see any advantage to it over a manual. This is my personal opinion. Some people prefer the automatic, I just prefer the manual.
Having said that, my other car is a manual, with no PAS, no ABS, none of the goodies that make driving easier. Nevertheless I find driving that car 10 times more exciting than driving my auto.
My automatic is pretty darn slow too, she's a tad heavier than the manual equivalent and the kickdown often leaves a lot to be desired. I virtually never overtake anything because it just doesn't seem to have the guts. My boyfriend has exactly the same car with exactly the same engine but his is a manual version and it runs rings around mine. :rotfl:
If the automatic box goes in mine, I will be replacing it with a manual box.

Hi All,
One way to look at how to drive an automatic is to watch what bus drivers do, as practically all of these are autos.
Most never take the gearbox out of drive and simply just use the handbrake when stopped. Some gearboxes, Volvo ones I think, do automatically go into neutral when the parking brake is applied then back into drive as soon as it is removed. I'm sure I read somewhere that some 'posh' cars do this also! lol
Cheers
Steve

I wonder if those against automatics gearboxes are also against auto choke, auto advance and retard, synchromesh gear boxes, electric starters, windscreen demisters, heated rear windscreens, heaters, electric windscreen wipers, electric windows, anti lock brakes etc. etc?

Probably, they are all a tad sad to be honest. They seem to be of the opinion that you have to have a gear lever to make the car operate to its maximum. They obviously have a seriously limited driving experience of automatic cars.
Ok some may be slow - but that doesn't only apply to auto's - I've driven many stick shifts that I have felt the need to get the horse whip out to!!

But that doesn't mean it isn't a 'proper' car if it is an auto - as previous poster said.
I don't know what you drive but mine kicks down lovely. Alot of cars - ie Toyota Supra, which i drive at weekends, is also an automatic and leaves a lot of cars standing, so you can't accuse an auto of being slow versus a manual!
I agree, neither a manual nor an automatic is more 'proper' than the other, that's just silly. ;)
However, a Toyota Supra is (allegedly) a fast car overall, regardless of the transmission it has. I made a comparison between two identical cars with identical engines, the only difference being that mine is auto and boyfriend's is manual. His is faster than mine. Here are the cars in question:
The manual:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/Shoshannah/sfhfitp2007smaller.jpg
The auto:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/Shoshannah/yakufitp2007smaller.jpg
But hey, cars develop. Diesels as old as these cars were pretty slow, noisy and smoky but modern diesels are (I am led to believe) quick, quiet and clean. I have no doubt that autoboxes have improved since too. :)
I like my automatic, very fond of her. But I prefer driving my manual. Other people prefer the auto. :) World would be boring if we all liked the same things. :)

No offence taken. I do actually have experience of more modern cars, no matter how strange that may seem. You may be amazed at how fast some of these older cars go. ;) I have spent the last few posts telling you how my auto is slower than the manual equivalent, but nevertheless she's still quicker than some of the modern stuff on the roads.
I have a friend who owns an 1982 car with an early 90's automatic gearbox in it, that thing goes 150mph+. :rotfl: He needs the auto because he has a spinal disease and finds it too painful to use a clutch.
Nothing wrong with automatics, I'm not dissing them. :) Mine's OK. I just prefer my manual, this is my personal opinion and will inevitably differ from other people's. :)

All this into Neutral and using the handbrake malarky is something drivers of manuals do to keep their hands busy. Automatic drivers just use the brake. :)
Hi, I passed my driving test in automatic June this year & was learnt & told by my instructer that if waiting at lights that have just turned to red or longer than a short space of time, then I have to put the handbrake on and put into neutral as I'd get marks on my test for keeping it in drive & foot on the brake for some reason.
I don't know if he told me that because it wears the brakes, or because the engine's still trying to pull the car guzzelling more petrol or because of the engine doing something (can't remember the word on what it does when I sit for ages on the brake in drive but it feels like it stops pulling slightly like its gone sleep & not as noisy).
Me though I keep my foot on the brake if I know I won't be there long, otherwise handbrake goes on and slap it into neutral.

Have just read through all the posts and learned something even I didn't know  - it never occured to me that putting in P at lights etc has to go through R and would give the guy person behind me the heebiejeebies! Mind you there are times when some of the guys persons behind me need a wake-up call..what's the deal with trying to get through the lights before I've put my car into D  ? You'll only get my brake lights, or sometimes my fog light, or if I'm feeling particularly unfeminine a gesture if you do that ...
In true MSE style I drive a very basic Accent 1.3i with electric nothing, no gadgetry, even got wind-down windows and no c/locking to go wrong. It has to last me another 4 years (bought new in 2001, now saving for the next/final one), so I'll try to remember to park in N in future and just hope I haven't screwed my gear box
Thanks for the amusing (and sometimes even informative :rotfl: ) thread

Made me laugh when I read that automatics are more complicated than manuals to drive! What a joke! Manual cars dont take any effort to drive hardly. Because of that, automatic drivers are extremely lazy! Manuals have a lot more control than autos. It makes me cringe when I see a bus going up a hill and the gears change. I prefer to select a lower gear at the bottom of the hill, instead ofchanging down halfway up a hill! As for stopping at traffic lights, manuals should be put in neutral and handbrake applied (takes strain off clutch cable and brakes). In autos, I dont really care what the right or wrong way is, but surely parking at lights with BRAKE lights on is not the correct procedure! I would like to ask the auto drivers what they do at a 'stop' junction, do they apply handbrake or foot brake?

Auto's have gears too so that you can select a lower gear for steep hills if need be.
Re junctions (and lights), I personally put foot on the brake and keep it there til I need to move forward. I don't park at lights. I park in car parks or up my drive.....

Has anyone heard of spacers in an automatic gearbox? We were told a while ago that we would need new ones sometime. The car drives fine, but is a bit slower pulling away at junctions, than it used to - and a teensy bit 'jumpy' when pulling away or beginning to reverse - just need to press a bit harder on the accelerator and it's okay.
Sorry, if i'm not explaining it very well..!

most transmission jobs will be expensive as it will be fairly labour intensive and probably need to be removed from the car to do the job properly.
not sure about spacers, havent worked on a auto box for ages, nevermind a new auto like this, but when i did regularly it was clutch packs that needed replacing, dont know about spacers, the clutch pack had a ferodo lining and would wear out,but took lots of abuse and high temperatures with loads of miles before needing replaced.
