Send an SMS with the word Text to 1127.

They immediately send a reply, and then you need to await a second text confirming the 30 free ones have been applied to your account.

The 30 free ones are valid for one month. !If you want to continue having 30 texts each month they will add £2 per month onto your bill.

To opt out, contact customer services.

I picked up this from a friend. Texting to a different number.
"If you are on Orange just text the word "text" to 1122 and you will get a text telling you that the free texts will be added soon, and soon you will have a text telling you that they are acvtivated and there you go.

Enjoy 30 free texts

Works for PAYG too. "

Don't know how long it lasts. Didn't see anything about being charged after 1st month.

let my mate know about about this!

Not sure if this has been picked up earlier in the thread but you can also get thirty free texts each month when you send them from the orange website. You do have to register though!

BEWARE - if you have Orange Textsaver on your phone (5 free texts per day), doing this will CANCEL your text saver.

My boyfriend did it & his text saver's gone. !There's something in the terms & conditions for textsaver - saying it can't be used with any other offers. ! Luckily he only had 2 months to run on the text saver.

If you've already done it - you can get a new text saver for £9.99 at The Link (http://www.thelink.com/martlinprd/store/lin_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1596308437.109049156 0@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdadclmemlflhcflgceggdhhmdfhn. 0&page=ProductList&category_oid=-17882&search=match&criterion=text). This gives you £5 of call credit and 5 free texts per day for a year.

But Orange Textsaver is only for PAYG phones!

This thread is discussing getting the free texts for contract phones.

(The 30 free texts for PAYG phones is being discussed in this THREAD (http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Free;action=display;num=1089632747; start=))

The warning is worth posting there, as posters are discussing combining the free texts with their textsaver plans now!

Be aware and check - you may have to cancel after the 1st month otherwise I imagine they will charge you £2 a month from then on - it is always worth checking. Offers like this rely on people carrying on and paying after the offer period by either getting used to the extra 30 and being happy to pay, or fogetting to cancel, or EVEN not knowing!

Hope this helps

This is not correct - the try text promition will NOT cancel your text saver, however, the problem is possibvly caused by a technicality regarding your message centre number, if you have orange text saver you need to change it to 00447973100979. Don't accept that the free texts have stopped - this isn't right, either call customer services or call into your local Orange store - it's something we can fix!

The 30 free texts is only one example of free services Orange give away, others are photo messages, WAP access, video messages, calling to abroad, calling from abroad (Europe 1) and more see www.orange.co.uk/try for more information.

Another tip - get a free european travel adaptor (in a stunning orange colour) from your local orange shop, just go in and ask for one.

Dan

22-07-2004, 5:44 PM
Oh yeah - and all the free texts/anything else are valid for 30 days as of when they are activated.

Another one is to text 'Film' to 241 and you will get BOGOF at the cinema every wednesday - lasts for 5 yrs and only costs 10p for the text message (unfortunately, it doesn't come out of your free 30 texts!)

22-07-2004, 5:59 PM
So does anyone know whether you need to "cancel" after 30 days? or is it literally 30 free text and when its finished you're charged as usual?

22-07-2004, 6:02 PM
If you are on an Orange contract:

30 texts for 30 days - after that you will get put onto a text 30 bundle which costs £2 a month. You can call customer services on 150 at anytime during the free trial and tell them you don't want to be moved onto the chargeable bundle

If you are on Orange PAYG:

When the 30 have run out you will just pay 12p per text as usual.

22-07-2004, 6:13 PM
Oh, and as I mentioned in the PAYG thread, anyone who has any problems with this offer/cancelling the chargeable bundle can e-mail me and I will do my best to help them out with it.

Dan

22-07-2004, 6:16 PM
What about if you try to text from abroad? I am going to Rep of Ireland tomorrow and have been told that texts will cost 25p from there to home.

Can I use the 30 free from there too?

22-07-2004, 6:20 PM
No sorry Annie, you can't.

:(

But have a good time anyway!

22-07-2004, 6:37 PM
I've got an OVP contract (equivalent to Virgin) which usually means I'm not entitled to anything. Orange sometimes phone me to tell me of wonderful offers and when I tell them to pause for breath so that I can tell them what scheme I'm on, they hastily apologise and say that actually, no, I can't have it!

Do orange class it as PAYG or contract?

22-07-2004, 6:39 PM
It is classed as Pay Monthly, the reason you are often not eligible is because it is a discontinued product now.

However, in me experience you should be able to get the try SMS promotion as it is open to all customers.

Pete

just allowed it once, they check to see if you have had it before, or at least they did when I got my 30 free picture messages

22-07-2004, 7:50 PM
Hi,

When you send the text I believe it probably gets passed to a human being to check if you are eligible for the free text messages. The terms of the promotion state that you can only have the free text messages if you have not sent a text in the last 12 month. The operator will check your account to see if you are eligible and if you have not had it applied then it is probably because they have decided you are not.

It seems that some people have slipped through the net though!

To find out which products you are eligible for a free trial of you can call 343 from your Orange phone.

Hi everyone. I have just called Orange for my free texts only to be told as I am on Orange everyday 50 am not eligible for ANY free services from orange. What a liberty. Had my orange contract phone for at least 7 years so they have made a packet out of me!!!! My phone bill comes to £100 + per month but that cuts no ice with orange. Think it is time to move on..... Or has anyone got any ideas for me to save money on my orange bill (Contract)

Orange discontinued Everyday 50 some years back, existing customers were allowed to stay on the package. That's why orange won't give you any freebies. My friend's phone packed up on her and she had to buy a brand new one, if she upgraded and got a free phone she would have to change packages.
You really ought to upgrade to a high user tarriff. How long are you spending on the phone? There's a list of all oranges current packages here (http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/all_plans). If you see one you like, go into the shop you should be able to get a free(or very cheap) phone for upgrading. The more expensive the package, the better the phone.

23-07-2004, 12:25 AM
I was on Orange and recently moved to 3 (dont care as the underlying network is on O2 and I work in the mobile industry).

I Orange rang to buy out of my contract and asked for my PAC code to transfer my number, even tho Orange say they will not price match any 3 tarriff, they will !

They offered me 750 minutes, any time any network to stay, (aka the three package) Unfortunately I was already out of my 14 day hand back period on my 3 contract so I'm stuck.

But useful news for current Orange customers who want a better deal on Orange.

23-07-2004, 1:14 AM
does it work for texts to international destinations?

23-07-2004, 3:31 AM
True they will match 3 if you ask the right people at Orange. Did it for me last August, just had a year of 500 xnet anytime for £25/month.

Free texts from my phone sounds very good, I'll try it. But is it possible to send free texts via the web direct from my computer? Has anyone any advice?

23-07-2004, 2:29 PM
i have just checked in an orange pamphlet that my daughter picked up in the shop yesturday, yes you do get the 30 free texts but you have to contact them at customer services to opt out after month is up, otherwise you get charged £2.00 per month for further texts

I picked up this from a friend. !Texting to a different number.
"If you are on Orange just text the word "text" to 1122 and you will get a text telling you that the free texts will be added soon, and soon you will have a text telling you that they are acvtivated and there you go.

23-07-2004, 3:17 PM
i just tried this, waiting on my free texts.

is the £2 a month worth cancelling it for? doesn't it make 30 texts a month slightly cheaper anyway. they use text saver bundles which should mean that the £2 covers the cost of 30 texts and saves money too?

i'm slightly confused about this ???

26-07-2004, 12:08 AM
tried straight away. got a reply immediately.
TANKS FOR THE TIP!

26-07-2004, 12:13 AM
orange web site (when you r an orange payg or contract costumer) gives the chance to sent text messages 30 a month for free and also there is the possibility to have an e-mail address. every mail arrives a txt message to your phone informs you if the phone is wap capable you can reply to it immediately.

Hi there

Sent my text yesterday and got confirming reply. Yet to receive confirmation that free texts have been added. Does anyone know how long this usually takes?

Thanks

Betti

26-07-2004, 8:59 PM
I'm an Orange contract customer and I'm already paying for text bundles as part of my contract (I get 120 a month for somewhere in the region of £6). If I was to try for these free texts, would Orange let me do it and would it affect the text budle I already have? (120 texts as it is is nowhere near enough!) ::)

No, I didn't get any free texts. :(

I'm an Orange OVP Virgin tariff customer.

I sent a text to get my free SMS, got the confirmation back & started texting reely. Then my bill came thru a few days ago and I have been charged for every SMS I have sent.

Anyone else had this?

yes you can, and the best way to do this, is to get yourself a free program for microsoft windows called GenieTexter availaible at http://www.genietexter.co.uk it lets you sign up at various free SMS websites, and keeps all your login details in one place, saving you having to remember the webites URLs and usernames and passwords, and lets you send SMS via those websites, without actually having to visit them again once you have signed up with them. It also lets you have a single addressbook which works across all the sites, and saves you having to remember lots of mobile numbers as you can just enter the name of the person you want to send the SMS to and it replaces it with their number (if you have entered this info into the addressbook that is) Its got a lot of other nice features too, too many to go into here. Check it out for yourself :)

Free SMS Sites that you can use with GenieTexter include Orange who offer 30 free sms per month 02 who offer 30 free sms per month and 118888 who offer 10 free sms per day, there are also a lot more free sms sites supported, meaning if you signed up with all of them, you could send over 1200 free sms per month using this program! A saving of approximately £120 per month or £1440 per year! (assuming you normally pay 10p per message that is)

Hmmm - have just tried to cancel my 'subscription' to this service before I have to pay, and it turns out that this is NOT an offer from Orange. Orange customer services cannot put a stop to the billing (apparently there is a loophole in the law and if you reply to a rogue text such as this, it is assumed that you have 'contracted in' to that company so they can bill your telephone number for ever). They are trying to do something about this, but it will take a while - in the meantime do NOT EVER reply to any 'special offer' by text, unless you have first checked that it is your service provider who offers it.

I've just tried to cancel this before I start having to pay the £2 monthly ... it turns out this is NOT an offer from Orange, and Orange customer services CANNOT cancel the subscription. Apparently there is a current loophole in the law which means that if you send a text to one of these rogue numbers, you have 'contracted in' to that company and it can bill your telephone number for life (even if you don't know the company, and have been mislead). The advice is to NEVER send a text for a special/free offer unless you have checked that the offer is from your service provider. Orange are trying to do something about this but it will not be resolved until a while into the future. I've tried sending a note 'Cancel' to the same number, 1127, so let's see if it works. I doubt it somehow. >:(

Which service is causing the problem, sjcl?

The Orange free texts (which this thread originally was discussing) is definitely an Orange promotion (part of their "Try" offers).

Sorry for the delay - have been away .... You are correct - I called back Orange helpline after your reply and I was 100% mis-informed by the first person I spoke with at Orange. Apparently the reason that they couldn't take the service off my phone was that it hadn't been implemented as my phone is a corporate one (there was a different procedure to go through to set this offer up on a corporate phone). The 2nd Orange customer service person was super and even credited my Orange account. Thank-you.

30 texts for £2 works out to be 15p per text... std charge from Orange is 12p (I believe) so defo cancel it after the first free month

has anyone with Orange's text pack tried this? (average cost per text = 6.7p)

just wondering how that'd work... does it only kick in after you've exhausted your texts bought?

They've stopped doing the free texts by texting codes now, but if you ring customer services, they can give you alternative offers. I currently have 3000 free evening and weekend texts if I top up by £15 a month and free evening 'on network' calls if I top up by £10 each month - the offers run concurrently and I only need to top up by £15 to be eligible for both. They also gave me 30 free picture messages, just for calling up.

Good Luck :D
