I fractured my wrist at the weekend and now have a cast on it. Does anyone know if it is illegal to drive with a cast on your wrist? I can manage to change gear and steer perfectly well, but a friend said that insurance won't cover you if you have a cast on. Does anyone know?

I can imagine they will use any means to get out of paying for a claim. Also, from a medical perspective it may be best to allow your wrist time to heal anyway.

No, won't be a problem. As long as a medical condition is not notifiable to the DVLA and you follow your doctor's instructions on taking any prescribed medicine you are fine to drive. Often a doctor may tell you to avoid driving for a certain period of time after a break - but this is not because they are concerned that your driving ability is diminished, it's only because if you are involved in an accident you are more at risk of another break in the same place before it's had the chance to heal.
