I've home dyed my hair since the age of 13 but have never found a blue hair dye that stays in... anyone tried one that works? I really dont want to fork out a bomb to have it done at the hairdressers.
I dont need lots of it, just enough to put streaks in & do the ends (I know, not everyones cuppa tea but its what I like). All the ones I try fade quickly to a greeney colour.

How long do you leave the dye in?
Stargazer is GREAT if you leave it in overnight (with a towel on the pillow, naturally!)

I've only ever tried leaving them in for about 1/2 hour over recommended time as my hair goes dry easily & I've been worried about ruining it, especially after prelightening/bleaching.
Again, the directions electric blue went green fairly quick - any tips on how to slow this down bringmeshoes? except not washing my hair, lol.
So how long did stargazer last for you vik6525?

Well, like i said, it always depends on how long you leave it in....
Sometimes, if I had nothing else on, I'd leave it on for a entire weekend.... When i managed to do that, my hair would stay coloured for a couple of months, without fading...
But usually, id just leave it on overnight, and it'd last for about a month or so....
The other thing I found is that it fades more slowly on bleached hair...
Dont know if that any help to you?

I wonder if it's going green because of a reaction with chlorine in your water?
And I wonder if an after-swimming shampoo would help you?
Boots have a new-ish range which includes a version for coloured hair. Blue, triangular bottles (http://www.boots.com/guidedsearch/newsearch.jsp?classificationId=314&D=swim+shampoo&Ntt=swim+shampoo&searchArea=1&Ntk=all&Dx=mode%2bmatchallpartial&uri=%2Fonlineexperience%2Fflexible_template_2006.j sp&searchTerm=swim+shampoo&Go.y=0&N=4294961088&Nty=1&Go.x=0).
I use the regular version after swimming and find it very good for getting the 'swimming pool smell' off me.

blue dyes always fade to a greeny colour at some point, as vik says they work better on bleached hair. i have my hair coloured pink at the hairdressers and bleach my hair before i go. i also use trevor sorbie shampoo & conditioner for coloured hair and finds it prolongs the colour

Thanks all, shall try the stargazer dye & leave on for as long as I can stand, luckily it goes on towel dried hair so hopefully I can get my mass of curls into a tidy plait afterwards (not so easy with dry dyed hair) or pigtails, then it'll look fairly neat for a couple of days.
I'll look into getting a decent shampoo for dyed hair, the new head & shoulders one still strips the colour away, just not as fast as the normal.
Shall let you know how I get on.

As for not spending a fortune at the hairdressers, ever thought of going to one of the big salons training acadamies. Got my hair coloured and hightlighted for £15 the other week.

I lightened my hair & put stargazer electric blue on, left on for about 36 hours, it came out green. So I put on the rest of the bottle for another 24 hours & it came out kinda aqua blue. Better but not the effect I wanted so I ended up putting blue-black all over, where the aqua streaks are it didnt take as dark as the rest & the blue shines through, fab effect!
At the moment a trainie is not an option for me as I'm scared of going to a hairdressers/training college hairdressers, irrational I know but I cant help it. Faced my fear today & went to a hairdressers to have my hair chopped, it was 1/2 way down my back, now its 7" at its longest, big change but I was bored with it, still scared hairdressers though, lol.

Blues and greens always fade badly, pinks and reds will last much longer.
I always did my own. The first one I used to use was Crazy Colour but that was yonks ago, then when I found it hard to get that I used directions but that was also a long time ago.
As you know bleaching your hair is pretty bad for your hair (well it was for mine as I bleached it using 60 vol peroxide and powder) but Crazy colour was like a conditioner it really helped my hair so I used to just top it up each week to keep it really bright.
Ahhh! The memories!
Well fancy that! Just looked it up (http://www.chrisandsons.co.uk/Crazy-Semi-permanent-Hair-Colour--3590_prod.html) and they still do it! And both my fave colours cyclamen and pinkissimo are still there!

I used to be a cyclamen girl too about 27 years ago! I've recently discovered Manic Panic, more expensive than Directions but lasts a LOT longer and goes further (only used pink though). I've also noticed that Directions have watered their dyes down recently, not good. Manic Panic is available from www.beeunique.co.uk (http://www.beeunique.co.uk) they also have hundreds of photos of people so you can get a good idea of what the colours will look like.

Meant to say, there's no problem with leaving it on as long as you want, most semi permanent colours have a conditioning effect.
