View Full Version : Specsavers & Broken Glasses

Through no fault of my own, my glasses broke yesterday. Because I was away from home, I couldn't get home to find my spare pair and had to do with no glasses until this evening, which was nearly impossible. :(

Anyway, if I take them in and say I'm having problems with them and have ahd them for over 6 months, (I'm due a test in March 2009) will they fix them for me>

They even fixed the pair I got from Select Specs when I sat on those they did say that because they were not theirs they shouldn't as they would be liable if in fixing them they damaged them but by the time she had finished telling me she wasn't supposed to fix glasses from other suppliers, she had put in the new screw and they were as good as new.

IME any opticians will fix this for you free of charge whether or not you bought them there. It takes a nano second to do if you have the right kit. You might also want to invest in a tiny screwdriver so you can diy to save time (but in a pinch the tip of a sharp kitchen knife or flat topped metal skewer will also do the job) provided of course you can find the screw!

why do you keep sitting on them for ted?:confused:Well it's the weather. Because it's such a crap summer I never get a good spell sunbathing so it's off and on through the day. I'm sure you have a very good idea what I do when it's very sunny, I want too keep my Vitamin D status as high as possible. Well I take everything off, put it in a safe place and then (because I can't see without my varifocals) find either when I put my clothes back on somehow I've stepped or sat on the glasses I thought were in a safe place. I think I'll get some of those bendable ones next time.

But Specsavers are great about replacing lost screws and if the glasses came from them in the first place your assistent won't even have to break their rules.

Yep, agree with the others, any optician should do that for you.

If you take them back to Specsavers they will do it for free as the frame has a 12 month warranty. If you take them back to another optician they may charge a small fee, we charge 20p. Somone asked me once what did I charge for a screw and I replied 20p before thinking about it!!!

DS2 'lost' the screw from his glasses in the fascination of something new to take apart combined with a boring lesson. He realised I wouldn't be too chuffed about this so fixed it with a paperclip. It was a while before I noticed, and I insisted he got it fixed because the arm was opening wider than it should have done so putting the whole frame under strain, I thought.

Ted, my solution to your problem would be a small bag on a cord. I have several small bags in different colours. I call them pockets: they are great for carrying the necessities of life around in the situation you describe but also good for the days when I don't have any pockets in my skirt.

Apparantely, Morrisons do the screws and the screw driver, so mum will be buying one of them for me.

Which are no good to me cos I cant see the screws if I dont have my glasses on :))

Same here. She did buy it and said it didn't work. Too fiddly or something.

You can get a hands-free magnifying glass: it's on a cord and you sort of project it from your chest ...

That's the cheaper option than a lamp with a magnifying glass attached. Although not as cheap as finding a not quite so myopic friend ...

Ted, another suggestion for you from my DH: apparently you can get towels with little pockets in, or the MSE way would be to sew a little pouch on. Even if you can't see your glasses without them on, you can presumably see your towel, so if you don't tread or sit on any part of it without first establishing where the glasses were, that would help too!
